Chinese-Canadian composer Alain Chiu will premiere a couple of his latest works, concluding his project of his reflection on being a by-passing San Franciscan. “Nocturne: Eighty-nine Steps under the Rainbow” will feature a large chamber ensemble of high caliber musicians from the San Francisco Conservatory, is a potpourri that draws influence from every possible genre as it creates a sonic canvas that is one of a kind. Other works by Alain Chiu included in the program ranges from a traditional piano trio “Influx/efflux,” “Under the Twinkle of a Fading Star” for 15 timpani and string quartet to progressive rock-influenced “Dirty Dialogue” for piano and drum-set.
Joel Morris, a Portland native whose music is performed constantly, will also premiere his latest creations: including an Octet for wind instruments, a new piece for string orchestra and reprises of numbers of his older works.
Both composers are committed to end their journey in San Francisco with a bang, as Alain said, “I have lived in San Francisco for four years and it is great to mark the end of this period with a full-length concert. It is the San Francisco I come to know through music; it is almost like a journal, one which I am going to share with everyone.”
